The Spanish island of Menorca has become the first to reach the ‘New Normal’ level of Covid-19 ratings in the country.
Covid-19 levels were found to be low on the island in the Balearics, according to a report from the Spanish Ministry of Health.
Eight parameters are used to determine the ‘New Normal’ level, including cumulative incidence rates, Covid cases among over-65s, positive tests, and the number of hospital beds for Covid-19 patients. Low, medium, high, and very high are the other levels.
However, because limits are regulated on a regional and national level, the new status does not indicate that they will be eased on the island.
Face masks are required across the country, although the government of the Balearic Islands will suspend its ban on June 6.
The Menorca Tourist Board praised the findings and expressed optimism that the island would be featured in the UK government’s green list update later this week.
Spain is currently on the amber list, which means that visitors arriving in the UK from Spain must stay at home for ten days. Certain island getaways have been rumored to be on the verge of being included to the green list.
Susana Mora, Menorca’s president and minister of tourism said, “Menorca tourism bodies together with the private sector have been working intensely to welcome visitors safely and have a long and extended summer season that will boost the local economy.
“Our island is the go-to destination for those who are looking to spend time outdoors reconnecting with the sea and nature, after the lockdown.”
Menorca’s cumulative Covid-19 rate over the previous seven days was 8.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants as of May 31, with no cases among those over 65.
The Balearic Islands, along with Valencia, are the only Autonomous Communities in Spain with a 14-day incidence rate of fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the Spanish average is more than 100.
Almost 42% of Menorca’s population has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccination, with about 18% having got all three doses.
