Emirates removed first class award availability from Alaska Mileage Plan in April 2021, and Emirates will now remove first class award availability from Japan Airlines Mileage Bank in September 2021.
Given how much Emirates Skywards has changed as a program as a result of the significant reduction in carrier-imposed surcharges, I don’t think this is a big deal. When you consider how convenient it is to earn Emirates Skywards miles, it’s a viable choice for many people who want to fly in one of my favorite first-class items in the world.
Emirates First Class is one of the most coveted award tickets available. It’s opulent. Emirates first-class passengers can take showers in-flight aboard Emirates Airbus A380s, in addition to the glitz and glamour of the gold-laden cabin and endless Dom Perignon champagne.
You can now book this luxurious experience using either Emirates’ Skywards miles or currencies from partners such as Alaska Airlines, Qantas, or JAL.
However, beginning in spring 2021, it seems that we will have fewer choices. Since after March 31, 2021, Emirates plans to phase out the opportunity to book first class with partner award currencies.
