After almost three years, a cruise ship connected to one of the first global major outbreaks of Covid-19 is now back in operation.
After undergoing renovations, the Diamond Princess welcomed passengers on board for its first voyage from its new homeport in San Diego, California.
The ship was supposed to start sailing again in the spring, but there were several delays. San Diego departures were delayed from September.
Diamond Princess will now run until February 2023 from the port on the US west coast.
With the ship’s restoration to service, all 15 of the line’s ships are once again operational.
The 18-year-old ship will go on a 20-day voyage to central America on 27th November as well as several itineraries around the US west coast, to Mexico, and to Hawaii.
Diamond Princess attracted attention from all over the world after being quarantined at Yokohama by Japanese authorities in February 2020 while carrying 3,700 passengers, including 78 from the UK.
Among passengers and crew, more than 700 instances of COVID-19 have been verified.
Following the outbreak, the government organized a flight for British passengers on the ship to be evacuated from Tokyo back to the UK.
