Question

I’m staying in Heraklion, Crete, this summer. I’ve always wanted to visit Santorini. Is it possible to visit Santorini on a day trip from Heraklion?

Heraklion is an excellent choice of destination! I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic time. You wonder whether it’s possible to go on a day trip to Santorini from Heraklion and what’s the best way to go about it. Santorini lies 120km off the coast of Crete, and it’s possible to visit in a day with a bit of planning.

Going on a day trip from Heraklion to Santorini is much easier in the high season (June-September) when the ferries are more frequent. There are several ways to go about the day trip.

Many tour companies provide all-inclusive day trips from Crete to Santorini, including return ferry tickets and a bus tour of Santorini plus return transfers to your Crete accommodation. An organised tour is an excellent option as you will be able to see much of Santorini in a day and not have to worry about missing the ferry home!

If you’re not a fan of structured bus tours, another option is to purchase return ferry tickets and transfers with a tour company and plan your own Santorini itinerary. This is a great option, and it’s easy to get around Santorini by using the KTEL bus network. A bus meets each ferry, taking you straight to the capital, Fira. Here, you can make connections to the fantastic beaches of Perivolos and Kamari or view the world-famous location of Oia.  You could also book your ferry tickets online.

You should also consider staying one night in Santorini to make the most of the island. Fira and Oia both have a spectacular sunset and pumping nightlife. There are some fantastic accommodation choices too!
